Shikha and Sanjay #3

SANJAY
I’m sorry… I’m just a bit bothered these days.

SHIKHA
What is it?

SANJAY
The band… it isn’t happening. You remember the new drummer we hired – Anjan – he backed out. He’s joining some stupid pop group!

SHIKHA
Why don’t you wait for Gautum to return?

SANJAY
No, he’ll go elsewhere once he’s back. That’s his job you know... that’s how these IT guys earn. One on-site project to another. I remember he told me when he left – 'I’m a special resource for my company now'. It only means they’re scared he’ll leave soon. So they sent him abroad; it’s gonna be tour after tour for him. Plus he’s too much into work now. That passion is missing in him now. You know, these software guys end up being dollar-driven eventually.

SHIKHA
He’s focussed on his career, what’s wrong with that? [Pause] You know Sanjay, I’ve never told you this but, I do feel you need to focus on your career too. You work like a government officer – with your fixed hours and all… Don’t you think you need to be a little aggressive?

SANJAY
Really? Who makes more money between you and me, huh?

SHIKHA
Anyone can earn in banks! I had a 14 lakh offer from a fancy bank, you know it... I took up FMCG at almost half the salary because I was passionate about it.

SANJAY
There you go... passion! That’s the word. My music is my passion, Shikha – you know it. I did my MBA because I needed a backup… something that would pay me enough to get this house and the car and… and those packets of maggi! That’s it!
[Pause] Shikha, I am not passionate about business! I don’t want to be a Mallaya. Morrisson is more like it… you know me! You loved me for being different, for the non-B-schooler that you saw in me, didn’t you? [Silence. He moves closer to her, softer…] Didn’t you?

SHIKHA
Uh, ya! But you know, I’m just concerned. I don’t want you to feel some fifteen years later, that you have wasted your most productive years. I don’t want you to regret this part-time thing of yours.

SANJAY
Ha… In fifteen years, I will be rich n' famous, baby!

[Pause]

SHIKHA
Ya, I hope so!

[Awkward silence]

SANJAY
[Licking his bowl] Shikh... can I have some more maggi?

SHIKHA
Sure!
[Leaves]

  4. @Sirop:
Now that you've pointed out, exits is the more appropriate word, yes. And she exits :)

Thought of changing it now but didn't - think leaves sounds more dramatic :D
